Throughout this book, the concept of framing is used to look at art, photography, scientific drawings and cinema as visually constituted, spatially bounded productions. The way these genres relate to that which exists beyond the frame, by means of plastic, chemically transposed, pencil-sketched or moving images allows us to decipher the particular language of the visual and at the same time circumscribe the dialectic between presence and absence that is proper to all visual media. Yet, these kinds of re-framing owe their existence to the ruptures and upheavals that marked the demise of certain discursive systems in the past, announcing the emergence of others that were in turn overturned.

Few medical or scientific addresses have so unmistakeably made history as the presentation delivered by Alois Alzheimer on November 4, 1906 in Tübingen. The celebratory event "Alzheimer 100 Years and Beyond" was organized through the Alzheimer community in Germany and worldwide, in collaboration with the Fondation Ipsen. This volume, a collection of articles by the invited speakers and of a few other prominent researchers, is published as a record of those events.

Hemicelluloses and Lignin in Biorefineries provides an understanding of lignocellulosic biomass, which is mainly composed of cellulose, hemicelluloses, and lignin. It promotes the valorization of these molecules in the context of the bioeconomy and presents hemicelluloses and lignin, which are generated in lignocellulosic biorefineries, as the molecules of the future. The viability of these molecules lies in their renewability and potential. This book covers all aspects of hemicelluloses and lignin including structure, biosynthesis, extraction, biodegradation, and conversion. The book also looks ahead to the socioeconomic and environmental value of biobased industry and emphasizes an understanding of the potential of lignocellulosic biomass.

With this third edition of Nelson Goodman's The Structure of Appear ance, we are pleased to make available once more one of the most in fluential and important works in the philosophy of our times. Professor Geoffrey Hellman's introduction gives a sustained analysis and appreciation of the major themes and the thrust of the book, as well as an account of the ways in which many of Goodman's problems and projects have been picked up and developed by others. Hellman also suggests how The Structure of Appearance introduces issues which Goodman later continues in his essays and in the Languages of Art. There remains the task of understanding Good man's project as a whole; to see the deep continuities of his thought, as it ranges from logic to epistemology, to science and art; to see it therefore as a complex yet coherent theory of human cognition and practice. What we can only hope to suggest, in this note, is the b. road Significance of Goodman's apparently technical work for philosophers, scientists and humanists. One may say of Nelson Goodman that his bite is worse than his bark. Behind what appears as a cool and methodical analysis of the conditions of the construction of systems, there lurks a radical and disturbing thesis: that the world is, in itself, no more one way than another, nor are we. It depends on the ways in which we take it, and on what we do.

For years he had been a benign parasite on the Koch family, first as the childhood playmate of Thomas, heir to the Koch family fortune, later as caretaker of the Koch family holiday villa on Corfu. And they, in their turn, had used him as the mood took them. But when the villa burns down because of Konrad's forgetfulness, Elvira Senn, the matriarch of the Koch family, puts him on a strict regime. No longer allowed his daily tipple, Konrad recovers and even falls in love again. But then his condition deteriorates. He can't find his way out of the supermarket, let alone his way home. Soon Konrad doesn't even recognise his new lover. Alzheimer's has taken hold. As Konrad loses his present he regains his distant past, and this is what Elvira fears the most. As they watch and wait for him to rewind to the crucial moment, his life is in danger from far more than the debilitating disease... A gripping psychological thriller, Small World depicts a man with a void in his soul whose only salvation lies buried deep within himself.

Myeloma is a malignant disease of the bone marrow, that provides an important role model for many other types of cancer. Although the subject of considerable research, the origins of the disease remain unclear. There has however been an explosion of interest in this disease in the past decade. The first edition of Myeloma: Biology and Management provided the first authoritative, comprehensive textbook, covering the epidemiology, immunology, and haematology of this important cancer. Sincepublication in 1995, several important advances have taken place in myeloma research, necessitating a review of the previous text. While bringing fully up-to-date the topics covered in the first edition, the second edition includes several new chapters; the patient and family perspective of the disease, infections in myeloma, cytogenetics, neurological complications, along with a history of myeloma. The book has been written and produced by the leading world-wide authorities in myeloma research. Comments on first edition 'This book represents a first-rate reference source for all haematologist and oncologists...' (British Journal of Haematology, 1995) 'Myeloma: Biology and Management may be the most comprehensive monograph written on this subject in the last 20 years... It belongs in the library of anyone seriously interested in myeloma and should be required reading for trainees in hematology or oncology.' Journal of the National Cancer Institute, 1995 'This book is a usefulcompilation of the most recent advances... It is beautifully bound, printed, and illustrated and will be a valuable reference to hemtologists, oncologists, molecular scientists, and fellows who attempt to make progress in the science and the therapy of plasma cell dyscrasias.' Rating - 5 stars. Doody's Health Sciences Book Review Journal, 1995
