Father Joseph Carola forms great priests. He is renowned as a scholar of the early Church Fathers – and equally renowned as a spiritual guide and friend to priests and seminarians. Those who study under him remain devoted to him, long after they’ ve returned home to put his lessons to good use in our parishes. Like its predecessor, this book of meditations gives us a rare chance to sit at the feet of a living master. Even more, it will inspire readers – priests, religious and laity – to conform their lives to the Living Mater: It deserves to become a spiritual classic. Scott Hahn, Ph.D. – Professor of Biblical Theology and the New Evangelization at the Franciscan University of Steubenville and visiting professor at the University of St. Mary of the Lake in Mundelein. Holy Orders sacramentally conform priests to Christ Crucified. Bearing our cross in the service of others, we do indeed duffer. If we attempt to bear that cross without the aid of Christ’s grace, it cripples us. But if we seek His grace prudently and prayerfully, we experience His Cross for what it truly is: the Tree of Life. Elaborating upon this spiritual insight, the sermons in this collection repeatedly return to the Philippians hymn of Christ’s self-abasement. That hymn lauds His death upon the Cross, but it does not conclude there. Rather, it joyfully proclaims that “God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should how, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (Philippians 2:9-11). To be conformed to Christ Crucified, therefore, is to be conformed to the Living One who is not to be found among the dead (cf. Luke 24:5). It is to be conformed to the Risen Lord Jesus Crucified who is Wounded Love Victorious. From the introduction.

During a sweltering East Texas summer, 13-year-old Stanley Mitchel Jr. begins a journey of awakening. His family runs the town's drive-in movie theater, where Stanley spends his time helping out, reading ten-cent comics, playing with his dog Nub and generally living a boy's life, circa 1958. When Stanley discovers a cache of old love-letters and starts to unravel a local mystery, however, he finds himself confronting secrets of ghosts, women, sex, race and his own courage. As he tells it, "I felt as if something living inside of me had been stolen, taken away and mistreated, then returned without all of its legs." Ultimately, it's a story about taking a clear-eyed look behind the veil and acknowledging the truth of things, without succumbing to them.

he Strange Order of Thingsis a pathbreaking investigation into homeostasis, the condition of regulating life within the range that makes possible not only the survival but also the flourishing of life. Antonio Damasio makes clear that we descend biologically, psychologically, and even socially from a long lineage that begins with single living cells; that our minds and cultures are linked by an invisible thread to the ways and means of ancient unicellular life and other life-forms; and that inherent in the very chemistry of life is a powerful force, a striving toward life maintenance that governs life in all its guises, including the development of genes that help regulate and transmit life. The Strange Order of Thingsoffers us a new way of understanding the world and our place in it.

A bestseller across Europe this international phenomenon is an ambitious, dynamic and intelligent historical novel written by four young Italian men. Set in the time of tremendous religious and political upheaval caused by the Reformation in Europe,Qbegins with Luther nailing his 95 theses on the door of the Wittenberg cathedral -- a historical flash point which would completely disrupt European society. The novel traces the adventures and conflicts of two central characters as they travel across Germany, Italy and the Netherlands. One is an Anabaptist, a member of the most radical Protestant sect. These are the anarchists of the Reformation who revolted against Catholicism and the emerging Reformation church. The other is a Catholic spy and informer. Like the leaders of religious reform, the book’s authors break with tradition -- seeking anonymity behind the pseudonym Luther Blissett. They have successfully created a world of intrigue, violence and intense political and religious passion. A phenomenal bestseller in Italy and Holland –Qis now being translated into eight languages. When it was first published anonymously in Italy, it was widely rumoured to be the work of Umberto Eco.
