In his new book, Gordon M. Shepherd expands on the startling discovery that the brain creates the taste of wine. This approach to understanding wine's sensory experience draws on findings in neuroscience, biomechanics, human physiology, and traditional enology. Shepherd shows, just as he did in Neurogastronomy: How the Brain Creates Flavor and Why It Matters, that creating the taste of wine engages more of the brain than does any other human behavior. He clearly illustrates the scientific underpinnings of this process, along the way enhancing our enjoyment of wine. Neuroenology is the first book on wine tasting by a neuroscientist. It begins with the movements of wine through the mouth and then consults recent research to explain the function of retronasal smell and its extraordinary power in creating wine taste. Shepherd comprehensively explains how the specific sensory pathways in the cerebral cortex create the memory of wine and how language is used to identify and imprint wine characteristics. Intended for a broad audience of readers—from amateur wine drinkers to sommeliers, from casual foodies to seasoned chefs—Neuroenology shows how the emotion of pleasure is the final judge of the wine experience. It includes practical tips for a scientifically informed wine tasting and closes with a delightful account of Shepherd's experience tasting classic Bordeaux vintages with French winemaker Jean-Claude Berrouet of the Chateau Petrus and Dominus Estate.

Neurology, Volume 1 presents the proceedings of the First International Congress of Neurological Sciences, held in Brussels, Belgium, on July 21–28, 1957. This book provides information pertinent to the fundamental aspects of neurology. Organized into 107 chapters, this compilation of papers begins with an overview of the significance of genetic factors in multiple sclerosis wherein its occurrence in more than one member of a family have a very limited value. This text then examines the two common disorders, namely, cervical spondylosis and disseminated sclerosis. Other chapters explain the mechanism of demyelination problem in considering the pathology of multiple sclerosis or any of the degenerative diseases of the nervous system. This book discusses as well the commonest types of headaches observed, including tension headache, migraine headache, post-traumatic headache, and those associated with hypertension. The final chapter deals with cerebellar ataxia, chronic respiratory infection, and telangiectasia. This book is a valuable resource for neurologists, psychiatrists, and neuropsychiatrists.

The discovery of insect neurohormones dates from the earliest experimental in vestigations in insect endocrines, and the matter cannot be discussed without evoking the names of its pioneers-Kopec, Wigglesworth, Fraenkel. Whereas the experiments demonstrated the existence of the first known neurohormones, the formulation of the concept of neurosecretion was of fundamental importance to further progress, and tribute must be paid to Ernst and Berta Scharrer. The recent proliferation of investigations into insect neurohormones has cre ated the need for an overall review of the data. Our knowledge of the subject is voluminous, and the evidence clearly demonstrates that neurohormones playa part in most insect regulatory processes. This book analyzes and synthesizes the data, starting from neurosecretion (i.e., source sites and release modes of neurohormones) and continuing through the various functions in which neurohormones have been shown to be involved: endocrine gland activity; diapause; reproduction; visceral muscle functioning; color change; behavior; water and ion balance; protein, sugar, and lipid metabo lism; and tanning and other processes occurring at the cuticle level. In each chapter, besides the experimental information, technical procedures as well as recent information concerning purification of the particular neurohor mones and their mode of action are reported. Numerous exhaustive tables allow the reader to get an overview of the matter while the major findings of the mo ment are presented in the conclusion of each chapter.

Neuropathology, Volume IV presents the proceedings of the First International Congress of Neurological Sciences, held in Brussels, Belgium, on July 21–28, 1957. This book provides information pertinent to the fundamental aspects of neuropathology. Organized into 84 chapters, this compilation of papers begins with an overview of the problem of multiple sclerosis and its relationship to leucodystrophies. This text then explains the two major histopathological manifestations of the injury caused by the rabies virus in the central nervous system. Other chapters consider the successful identification and isolation of a biologically active compound, which depends to a large extent on the availability of a quantitative bioassay. This book discusses as well the clinical manifestations, pathogenesis, and treatment of multiple sclerosis. The final chapter deals with the study of nucleic acids as well as histochemistry as a method of histological inquiry. This book is a valuable resource for neuropsychiatrists, biochemists, physicians, and scientists.

Organized by functional neurologic system, the 3rd edition of this authoritative reference provides the most up-to-date information on neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, neuropathology, and clinical neurology as it applies to small animals, horses, and food animals. Accurate diagnosis is emphasized throughout with practical guidelines for performing neurologic examinations, interpreting examination results, and formulating effective treatment plans. In-depth disease descriptions, color images, and video clips reinforce important concepts and assist with diagnosis and treatment. Expert authors bring more than 50 years of experience in veterinary neuroanatomy and clinical neurology to this book — Dr. Alexander DeLahunta and Dr. Eric Glass offer their unique insights from both academic and practitioner perspectives. Disease content is presented in a logical case study format with three distinct parts: Description of the disorder Neuroanatomic diagnosis (including how it was determined, the differential diagnosis, and any available ancillary data) Course of the disease (providing final clinical or necropsy diagnosis and a brief discussion of the syndrome) More than 600 full-color photographs and line drawings, plus approximately 150 high-quality radiographs, visually reinforce key concepts and assist in reaching accurate diagnoses. The book comes with free access to 370 video clips on Cornell University’s website that directly correlate to the case studies throughout the book and clearly demonstrate nearly every recognized neurologic disorder. High-quality MR images of the brain are presented alongside correlating stained transverse sections for in-depth study and comparison. Vivid photos of gross and microscopic lesions clearly illustrate the pathology of many of the disorders presented in the book.
